Brain Fitness - The 3 Things You Must Know to Save Your Brain From Slow Decline

There is tremendous excitement in the air about brain fitness. And here is why: the more everyone wants to extend the years of work and play, the more everyone needs to know how to keep the brain working well. And more than ever, building a hedge against dementia has become an essential now that it is possible to live a long, long life.

However, when you are starting out, wondering how to build brain fitness can seem like an uphill climb. With so much information (and misinformation) out there, how can you be sure even your first choices will deliver the results you want?

Is it OK with you if I save you months of false starts and frustrations?

Good! I have discovered three things everyone who wants better brain fitness must know to insure they get off to an absolutely stellar start with their program.

First, get into action, any action. Doing nothing except passively thinking about what you want, doesn't do much good. Just figure out something to do and get started. Seriously, just pick anything and start! You don't have to know everything to start, just pick any program you think will help and begin. Movement educates you. Action dispels fear. Every step you take builds courage, confidence and momentum. Just get into action!

Now that you are in action, you can make better choices. Most people think that brain fitness only requires brain exercises like crosswords and Sudoku. When it comes to brain fitness include physical movement, balance, manual dexterity, and social stimulation.

Finally, persist daily! Use it or lose it applies to the brain too! Even if you think you are not doing the best activity, being in daily action is the secret. The brain thrives on new learning, challenge, variety, and ACTION.

I sure wish I had known these three absolutely crucial keys before I started out because it would have helped me get to where I wanted so much faster. But now, you have the benefit of my hindsight!

By implementing these three simple but powerful ideas you will be able to improve your brain performance now and build a hedge against dementia, starting today!

How The Brain Learns

Do you remember when you moved the furniture in your room? Do you remember how you kinda bumped into everything a couple of times and then figured it out. The funny thing is that it took you two to three turns of bumping into things in the dark, before you worked out things had changed.

And the brain learned. Through repetition.

But remember when you put your finger into a candle flame and got burned? You never ever did that again, did you? The brain learned a lesson very, very quickly. You didn’t need a second turn to figure out the danger.

In effect, the brain learns through:

1) Repetition

2) Extreme danger

Since your business isn’t in extreme danger all day, through out the year, the chances are your brain isn’t learning as much as it possibly could. Which is why it’s important to use the concept of repetition. Take one concept that you learn in business and repeat it time and time again. For example: Referrals. Ask for referrals every single day, in every single way. And mark a tick if you succeed. Mark a cross if you fail. In under ten days, referrals will become part of your system. And you’ll never forget it.

Repeat. It’s the only way to learn.

Feeding Brains

A customer who was considering purchasing an open brain coral (Trachyphyllia geoffroyi) from us called me up to ask me if he would need to feed this animal. He said that he had seen a lot of contradictory information on the Internet about whether or not open brain corals need targeted supplemental feedings or not. Given our focus on brain corals this week, I am going to answer his question here so that everyone knows what it is we recommend.

First off, I thanked this customer for doing his research before acquiring the animal. I can't emphasize how important it is that you research every animal thoroughly before you purchase it in order to make sure the animal is compatible with your set-up and that you are prepared to meet the animal's needs in terms of husbandry. Regarding the feeding of open brain corals, you will see a variety of opinions ranging from "never feed an open brain coral directly" to "feed it daily." We definitely recommend target feeding any brain coral. Whether you have one of the many Favia species or a colorful Trachophyllia, brain corals in general do much better in reef tanks with supplemental feedings.

But where is the mouth? "Wait a second," you say. "Brains have mouths?"

While that sounds like a campy science fiction movie from the 50s, the take home point is valid. Brain corals do have mouths, and they do need to be fed. Most brain corals are nocturnal feeders, and they change their appearance dramatically at night by partially deflating their tissue and extending feeding tentacles located around each individual mouth. Some brain corals have many mouths while others are sold as pieces of a larger colony (e.g. Lobophyllia) and usually have only one mouth.

Regardless of the number of mouths, you want to target feed these animals two or three times per week. Try small pieces of meaty marine flesh, brine shrimp, baby brine shrimp, Cyclopeeze, or our own Blue Zoo Mix. You can soak the food in water with a vitamin supplement like Selcon and then use a turkey baster or the Kent Sea Squirt to target feed each open brain coral. After the coral gets acclimated to aquarium life, it will almost always extend its tentacles whenever these foods are present-even during the day.

With the proper husbandry, open brain corals will grow quickly and remain healthy in most systems.
